Fresh Start Texas rests in the heart of the majestic Rio Grande Valley about thirty miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Surrounded by lush farmland, this center offers the peace and quiet so conducive to the recovery journey. Resting on 17 beautiful acres of land, the Center provides a sanctuary from the hectic and often dangerous environment found in the substance abuse culture.
Our long term treatment program, as further described in this guide, provides complete physical, mental and emotional recovery from substance abuse, which is one of the most difficult, and ultimately most rewarding, endeavors that one will accomplish in life. Therefore, we understand the importance in having a center that provides those components necessary to complete this process, while also ensuring our clients have a distraction free, comfortable environment.
Walks or jogs around the lovely fountain & pond or fishing in the little river that borders the property, provides a tranquil change of environment for our clients. Other recreational and physical fitness opportunities are available too, such as volleyball, basketball, swimming, and fitness workouts. Also, our outdoor picnic area, amid the beautiful mature trees and flowers, offer a relaxing place for breaks & socializing.
Although, it is beneficial to have all of these activities available after the regular program schedule, our cognitive behavioral modification program takes up the majority of each of our client's time and focus, as well as the time and focus of our dedicated staff. For this reason, our program staff is always available to ensure that each of our clients is progressing well through each stage of our program and in the many other areas of their lives.
Taking individuals from a life of alcohol, drugs and chaos, to a life of direction, purpose and integrity, is not easy. Fortunately, our cognitive behavioral modification model has a 76% success rate accomplishing true rehabilitation and has a proven record of success doing so for over 45 years.
Our rehabilitation philosophy is not based on the disease model, which dictates that someone with an addiction will always be an addict with an incurable disease that they cannot overcome, but which they can only to learn to cope with for the rest of their lives. Our educational rehabilitation philosophy is based on confronting and locating the many causes of addiction and the many behaviors associated with it and resolving them. Our clients may enter our program as addicts or alcoholics, but become students through our educational Life Skills program, and leave truly rehabilitated without the need to use the labels of "addict" or "alcoholic".
Our program accomplishes true rehabilitation through the use of our New Life Detoxification program, which removes the physical cravings and compulsions that are caused from the drug residual build up within the body, and from the application of the Life Skills courses to help achieve the cognitive behavioral modification that is needed to become a happy, drug free, productive member of society.
Our proven rehabilitation program has many components, is very structured and it is laid out in a specific step by step sequence to obtain the best results. This road to true recovery is intense, but with proper guidance and our correct rehabilitation technology it can be accomplished. The rest of this guide will give you more detailed information of our program.
Location - Fresh Start Texas is located in Harlingen, TX near the beautiful beaches of the Texas Gulf Coast and is surrounded by rich farmland, offering a serene environment for recovery.
Program Length - The Fresh Start program is supervised 24 hours a day and the program duration is dependent upon the participant's successful completion of all of the program steps, rather than a set time period, and generally takes 3 to 4 months to complete. Before each participant is qualified to graduate, each step of their program is reviewed by their case supervisor and the application of their newly acquired life skills must be demonstrated to ensure that they will be productive drug and alcohol free members of society.
Success Rate and Guarantee - The Fresh Start program has a 76% success rate and our positive results are backed by a 6 month guarantee, in which a graduate having difficulties can return for free within 6 months of their graduation.
Secular Program - Although the Fresh Start program is secular (non-religious), program participants' religious beliefs are respected, and transportation is provided to their respective local churches on days of worship, when possible.
Holistic Approach - The Fresh Start program is completely drug-free and provides a holistic approach to recovery. Vitamin supplements are available daily, and nutritious, delicious meals are provided three times a day.
Relief from Drug and Alcohol Cravings - Drug and alcohol residuals (metabolites) are stored in the fat cells of the organs and tissues of the body. They can become released from these cells during times of stress and spread into the blood stream, where they can cause cravings, withdrawal symptoms, anxiety, or even depression. Our New Life Detoxification sauna program accelerates the body's natural elimination process removing these metabolites. Once free from the physical compulsions and cravings, participants are now prepared to address the mental aspects and life repair portions of the program.
Cognitive Behavior Modification Therapy - Through a series of educational Life Skills courses, case supervising and counseling techniques, program participants are guided to have their own cognitions (realizations) concerning their behavior. They are educated to become self-determined in modifying their behavior, so as to enhance their survival. The Fresh Start program focuses on honesty, responsibility, and accountability for one's own actions, which creates productive individuals with a tremendous amount of integrity guiding their decisions.
Social Interaction - Although program participants go through a lot of individual hard work on their way to recovery, they also learn to interact socially with their peers in the program by helping each other through various courses of the program. This allows them to learn how to become good productive team members and learn how to build constructive relationships.
Activities - Fresh Start participants are encouraged to participate in healthy activities and we provide the following at our facility: a weight & exercise area, pool, jacuzzi, sauna, basketball, volleyball, tennis, walking/jogging path, ping-pong, and occasional trips to town. Seasonal flag football and softball league participation offered. Please check with your intake counselor for availability.
Legal Liaison Services - Any information on current or pending legal matters should be relayed to our Legal Liaison Officer (LLO), who will assist in their handling during the program. Each Fresh Start facility has specific staff with many years of experience in dealing with probation requirements and other court related issues. Court costs, legal representation, fees and travel expenses are the responsibility of the program participants and are not covered by the cost of the program.
Medical Liaison Services - Our Medical Liaison Officer will arrange and transport participants to local doctors or dentists to handle any current or pending medical or dental conditions that may arise during their program. A medical physical exam is covered by the program cost, but all other medical and dental expenses are the responsibility of the program participants and are not covered by the cost of the program.
The Program does not refer to the program participants as addicts, but as students, because they are about to learn how to handle life without the use of drugs or alcohol.
Withdrawal - Trained specialists supervise newly arriving program participants 24 hours per day and assist them with the physical symptoms of withdrawal. A calm, private, therapeutic environment with special withdrawal therapies, nutritious meals, vitamin supplementation and plenty of rest, assist in achieving a successful drug free withdrawal.
Life Skills Courses - Through a series of educational courses, students have cognitions to enable them to modify their behavior. Each student becomes aware of the sources of their problems and they learn how to formulate solutions, so that they are no longer being adversely affected. Each student's progress is constantly monitored by their course supervisors and their case supervisor to ensure that each student's individual case needs are met.
Communications Course - Training routines (TRs) are communication drills that are used to increase the student's ability to confront themselves and others, comfortably, with good communication. These skills are needed for the student to address the issues that he has been avoiding through drug use, and which he will now be handling in the program.
New Life Detoxification Program - Removes the drug residuals from the cells of the body, thereby eliminating the urge for drugs on a physical level. This process takes a several weeks, and it will help eliminate the source of the drug or alcohol cravings, so the student can focus on finding and confronting the source of his problems during the remainder of the program.
Learning Improvement Course -Many participants entering the program have never really learned how to study correctly and have just "gotten by" by memorizing or regurgitating information. This course teaches the student to recognize and overcome universal barriers to study, allowing the student to fully understand and practically apply all subjects and materials studied, during and after the program.
Communication & Perception Course - Part A of this course is a higher gradient series of communication training routines (TRs). Part B is a series of objective exercises or drills that rehabilitate person's awareness and ability to control themselves, others and the things in their environment, while also bringing their attention back from the past and into present time, so they can move forward.
Ups and Downs in Life Course - Describes in-depth traits of social and antisocial personalities, so that the student can differentiate between people, who are either constructive or destructive to their survival. The end result of this course is that the student is no longer connected to people that are harmful to their recovery, and that they now know how to handle suppressive people and situations. Although, the counselors & course supervisors guide each student, it is the each student, themselves, that makes the final decision to no longer associate with those people who are harmful influences.
Personal Values and Integrity Course - Enables the student to take responsibility for the destructive acts they have committed in the past with a procedure that also unburdens them from the blame, guilt and regret associated with those past acts. Through this course, they regain their personal ethics, morals and integrity, which makes it much easier for the person to feel good about themselves without the use of drugs or alcohol.
Changing Conditions in Life Course - Educates the student on the various states of existence or conditions in life. It shows the student how to raise their condition, through the application of formulas for each condition they find themselves in and includes the steps needed to repair relationships, which have been damaged by their addiction. These formulas can be followed after the program to help one regain their status at work, at home, with friends and with society at large.
Way to Happiness Course - This course contains 21 precepts of a common sense moral code that when followed will put one on the road to happiness, like precept 19, The Golden Rule, which states "Try not to do things to others that you would not like them to do to you".
Battle Plan - This is a step by step plan that the student writes up that applies the data that the student has learned on the program to give them the maximum potential for success after completing the program. The plan is reviewed by both the course supervisor and the case supervisor to ensure that the correct course of action is applied.
Aftercare Options - There are several different aftercare options offered to graduates, such as living in a sober living home, volunteering, or entering our internship program, which is the most popular and most successful. Please check with your intake counselor for more details.
Internship Program - Graduates can enroll in the after program internship, in which they pay a fee to stay for 3 months, receive room & board, and train as an intern in rehabilitation services. The internship can reestablish a good work ethic, lead to a successful career in rehabilitation services or prepare them for a successful career back at home.
This program overview contains guidelines and suggestions, based on successful actions of the past. We hope you will apply these simple guidelines at your discretion and we urge you to call and ask for our Director of Consultation or Family Consultant for any concerns or questions you may have at (956) 423-2853.
The staff at our centers are trained to detect drug "restimulation" and they know what to do to get the student settled down and "destimulated" so they can continue working through the program successfully. Therefore, the staff should be consulted regularly during the program.
During the withdrawal portion of the program, we do not allow students to make or receive phone calls, because they are adjusting to the program, as well as experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, we ask that you speak with our center's Director of Consultation or Family Consultant for progress reports. Detox usually lasts anywhere from 2 to 10 days. Once out of withdrawal, students are allowed to make and receive phone calls. Please make sure your communication is upbeat and supportive.
You're likely to notice an improvement in attitude within a short time and may want to visit. It is strongly suggested that you do not visit until the New Life Detoxification sauna program is complete, usually 4-6 weeks after they have arrived into the program. Do not encourage them to come home for a visit either, as it is best to allow them to complete the entire program without interruption, so they can be prepared for any situations that they may encounter, when finally returning home.
During the Program there will be many hurdles and obstacles to overcome, and it will be very difficult. The student can become very irritated and irrational during these times, so please be patient with them and please refer the student to the center's staff for assistance. Also, please call our center's Director of Consultation or Family Consultant to alert them to any difficulties the student may be having at (956) 423-2853.
Withdrawal: Addiction is still in full effect, and it is still controlling the addict, therefore they will tell you anything to use drugs at this point, and their reasons and complaints cannot be trusted.
The Communication Course: At the beginning, participants do not see the point in the communication training routines (TRs), but after continued practice, they begin to understand them and improve their communication.
New Life Detoxification Program (Sauna): As drug residuals are being flushed out of the body, the student will be getting triggered by them and can experience severe mood swings, but as time in the sauna program continues, they will start to feel markedly better and improvements will be very noticeable in skin tone, sleep pattern and overall wellbeing.
Communication and Perception Course: These exercises can seem monotonous, because they take many hours to run before the student realizes the end results. The drills are very challenging, but the abilities that are gained, after completion, last a lifetime.
The Ups and Downs of Life Course: Overcoming suppressive people and situations can be difficult, but the completion of this step will lead to confidence and safeguard them from relapse.
Hundreds of students graduate our program every year, becoming productive members of society. Our program graduates no longer refer to themselves as addicts, are not required to attend meetings and are empowered with the knowledge that they have gained in the program. They have learned much more than how to abstain from drugs and alcohol, they have acquired the ability to communicate, to be comfortable with themselves, to control themselves, to be honest, to be responsible for their actions, to choose the right friends and to confront and overcome problems. They are not only rehabilitated from substance abuse, they are now equipped with the tools necessary to be successful in the many other aspects of life.
Please contact program graduates or their family members directly, from the Family Reference List in this guide, to hear their program success stories first hand.
Our Family Reference List gives you the opportunity to hear from others who have sent their loved one to the Fresh Start program and share with you their honest opinion about their experience first hand.

Drugs such as heroin and alcohol normally come with a considerable amount of physical discomfort when an individual stops taking them.
That is why we conduct a pre-medical evaluation and provide safe 24-hour care, making drug free withdrawal relatively pain free. For severe cases, a medically supervised detox is available to help ease any physical discomfort experienced while withdrawing from drugs or alcohol. Once released from the medical detox, the individual will continue with their drug free withdrawal process at our center location. Each and every individual who enters our program will be watched over by detox specialists to help insure a relatively pain free withdrawal and to ensure all their emotional needs are met.
This phase of our program is designed to help the individual withdraw from drugs without having to suffer the usual painful withdrawal symptoms.
When an individual takes drugs and alcohol their body becomes depleted of vitamins and minerals. We use specific nutritional compounds to help rebuild the person physically. When a person is withdrawing from drugs and/or alcohol they are under supervision by a trained withdrawal specialist at all times. This lasts until both the physical and mental discomforts are eliminated.
This course is specifically created to help individuals with communication skills.
These drills are set up to help the student improve their ability to confront any situation they come across through communication. Individuals who have a problem with drugs and/or alcohol usually have a difficult time communicating with those around them. They often find it hard to talk about subjects they view as unpleasant.
Typically, when an addict is forced to confront sensitive issues they withdraw from their friends and family.
The Communication Course has eight different training routines to help with this problem. Students are extroverted by this therapeutic approach which helps them resolve problems with others easily.
Drug metabolites can remain in the fatty tissue of the body for years after they have been taken and it is important that they are removed.
These metabolites can cause drug cravings, depression and many other physical and emotional stressors when released into the blood stream. This process is a vital step in our addiction treatment process.
The New Life Detoxification Program removes the root cause of future physical re-stimulation and cravings.
As mentioned, many different types of drugs remain in the fatty tissues of the body long after the individual has stopped taking them. These different types of drugs include cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, valium, pcp, crank, crystal meth, methamphetamine, ecstasy, alcohol and medicinal drugs such as narcotic painkillers, tranquilizers, sleeping pills etc. As an individual continues to abuse a drug or drugs, metabolites from the drug or drugs accumulate and store in the fatty tissues of the user. If these metabolites remain stored in the individual, they can be released into the blood stream at times of stress causing severe craving and a potential for relapse.
A key point of our program is flushing out the accumulated toxic metabolites.
A protocol of medically supervised exercise in addition to periods of sweating in a dry sauna and nutritional supplements are utilized to rid the fatty tissues of the stored drug metabolites. Often times, the results are extremely phenomenal. It leaves the individual with significantly reduced drug cravings, and in many cases, without ANY cravings for drugs at all.
The learning improvement course helps our students with their ability to learn and comprehend knowledge that is presented to them.
In addition, it helps them with overcoming problems they may have had regarding studying and learning. Students learn how to "clear" words from the dictionary, create realistic demonstrations of concepts, and to notice and take care of gradient difficulties. In addition to the learning improvement course, Phase II incorporates tools to help the student achieve goals and regain their self-control. Students are guided through techniques to snap out of traumatic events of the past which they may be stuck in. This course increases the individual's ability to better handle such events in life.
This course is multi-faceted in that it further develops the communication skills necessary to confront and overcome the day to day problems associated with living drug-free.
It gives the student the ability to be comfortable and confident within one's self. Drugs are a temporary way for people to escape reality and change the way they feel. When the drugs wear off, they are left feeling introverted and worse than before they took the drug or drugs.
Also, memories of their transgressions against their family and friends stay with them, making them feel even worse.
This course helps the student to focus his/her attention on the present and the future, not stuck in the past. At this point their perception of their life improves as well as their communication with others. The Communications and Perception Course helps students become more "causative" over their life and the environment rather than being adversely affected by it.
This course gives the student the ability to confront the underlying issues which caused them to use drugs in the first place, as well as their present situation.
They learn to identify social and anti-social characteristics in others as well as themselves. This course makes them capable of recognizing situations that are potentially a source of trouble and their options when confronted with these situations.
Often, drug abusers and alcoholics are susceptible to negative influences.
In this course, students learn the characteristics of social and anti-social personalities in order to evaluate objectively and choose those people in their lives who need to be avoided. Completing this course enables the individual to evaluate behavioral, constructive, and destructive characteristics. It also provides them with appropriate methods for handling negative influences. This is an important part of remaining drug-free.
This was a wonderful book. It really helped me take a good look at my life and at myself. It helped me to learn how to handle people and pick the right ones in my life. I feel so lucky and so much better now that I have had a chance to get everything that was built up in my life off of my chest, lifting so much weight off me. I now know how to choose people. It is so awesome to be able to really confront and take a look at my past life and see how I screwed it all up. To see the effects of everything and then be able to actually take responsibility for what I have done not only to myself but to my family and friends. I feel great. Thank you so much for all of your help!
Addicts often find that through their addiction they lose their sense of personal integrity.
This is because the life style that goes along with addiction is one that almost always involves lying to friends or family, and almost as often involves the commission of illegal acts. Restoring personal integrity is not just a moral issue; it is a matter of survival. It is a fact that until one can confront and be honest about ones past, a person will be haunted by it. Until these types of misdeeds are dealt with, the addict will continue to be plagued with:
Unwillingness to communicate, withdrawal from family and friends, unhandled hostility toward those who try to help him or her. Feelings of resentment towards authority. A sense of being uncomfortable around ethical people, inability to have stable relationships.
There is even such a thing as a "drug personality."
It is a chemical personality that is created by drugs and alcohol. When an individual takes a mind altering drug or alcohol it changes their personality to one that secretly harbors hostilities and hatred that they do not want to show on the surface. An entire section of the Personal Values and Integrity Course was developed to handle just this.
This course offers the student an opportunity to clear their conscience of past transgressions and illicit behavior by taking full responsibility for their actions.
It provides the student with a code of honor to live by, stresses the importance of being honest in their lives, and the benefits of living in an ethical manner.
"I feel very confident in myself. I have drive and intention to work and get things done right the first time. I am very comfortable with my life and content with the way things are going. I will be ethical and moral and have integrity. I know I am a good person inside. Book 6 has helped me realize that things aren't that bad and that I can be happy for once. This book showed me things to do and not to do. I feel that I have learned so much. I completely understand and am applying what I have been studying. I will continue to improve more and more and will not go back to drugs or let people bring me down!"
Difficult choices arise for everyone at some point in their life.
For those who are addicted to drugs the difficult choices they make can be deadly. This course gives students the exact formulas to evaluate objectively and improve conditions having to do with their self, their family, the groups they belong to, and other areas of life. They learn that any condition can be changed for the better as long as it is handled correctly.
On this course, the student takes specific actions to repair the past and present conditions in their life. They are given the tools with which they can continue to improve conditions and situations in the future.Drugs are a temporary way for people to escape reality and change the way they feel. When the drugs wear off, they are left feeling introverted and worse than before they took the drug or drugs.
"I had many realizations in this book, I realized how selfish I had been throughout my addiction and how my exchange with my family as well as society was very one sided. I learned roadmaps (formulas) on how to get out of problem situations as well as how to be able to become successful in life or any endeavor in which I choose. Most importantly I realized that I needed to make up damage to myself, my family and society in order to propel my sobriety. I had been to too many rehabs before and like always I just 'took' what they offered me and selfishly walked out the door and wondered why I failed. Before this program I had always been a taker and after learning and applying this book I realized that in order for me to rise in life I need to give before I can receive. This book ties in all the prior books of this program and gave me a complete understanding of myself and for the first time in my life I feel confident about my future."
Wouldn't it be wonderful to be handed a "How to Live Life" manual?
Most of us go through life by trial and error. The Way to Happiness Course helps introduce the student to a common sense moral code that they can use in living a new drug and alcohol-free life.
"I feel as if now I am truly on my way to happiness. I have many times in my life gone down the wrong road. The beautiful thing about traveling down the wrong road is that I now know what the wrong road is. My decisions before were influenced by others. I can now once again think for myself and choose the right path to go down in my life. This is a huge win for me. A kind of bittersweet win, knowing that I am becoming stronger, but also knowing there are many out there in the world today that still need help. I wish everyone could feel as good as I do now, and I will continue feeling this way about myself."
Thank you sincerely.
This step of our program is comprised of two essential components tailored to meet the needs of each student.
1. A comprehensive review to ensure the student has thoroughly completed and gained the expected abilities of all phases of the program.
2. Creating a life plan. This is a plan for the new life that the student is beginning upon their completion of the program. This plan incorporates the application of their entire program and the student customizes it for their life and personal goals. This plan must be agreed upon by the student and their case supervisor. The plan must be seen to have the maximum potential for the student's success.
This last step incorporates every step of our program.
It helps to ensure that the graduate will live a drug-free, productive, and ethical life. Although each action of our program produces significant gains, it is the combined effect of all these steps collectively which result in a full and permanent recovery.
A comprehensive long-term follow-up program is designed and implemented to assist the student through the first year of their recovery.
This is achieved by regular communication with the graduate and their family members. They monitor and address the graduates stability and progress after their graduation from the program. The student will receive special assistance in addressing these life issues so he or she may maintain a drug and alcohol-free life.
During the first 6 months of the follow up program, if the client is having any difficulties with drug cravings or relapse we ask that the client return to our treatment facility for an advanced treatment review which is free of charge for up to 6 months after graduating the program.
